Bridges Home Health

logoI have loved caring for older folks for as long as I can remember. After I attended nursing school, I was the director for a large home health service in Ithaca, NY. I have always wanted to own my own business. In 2003, I took a big step and opened a licensed home health service in Mendon NY. At the same time, I purchased a lovely home that provides 24 hours care and supervision for under 10 seniors, much like a bed and breakfast for elders. Our Homecare service supplies folks that want to stay in their own home, surrounded by the things that they love with housekeeping, personal care, medication reminders, grocery shopping and much more, for folks that need companionship to skilled nursing care. Bridges of Mendon provides you much the same in our small charming residence.

ReneI felt quite confident in my abilities to run this business and was versed in my business but the business of “business” was another story. When the time came for business financing and the “details”, I panicked. Being a nurse is lovely, I thought and handy for running a nursing business. But, what do I really know about being a businesswoman? My tasks were daunting…What is a business plan? How do I market to my target audience? What does a profit and loss look like and what does it really tell me? I asked a friend, who was a chamber of Commerce member and also manages a local bank, she promptly referred her to Ray Feasey at SCORE. I called SCORE and had a return call the same day and a meeting with Ray a few days later. After the initial meeting SCORE brought an entire team to help. Frankly, I would not have secured my business loan or understood my business if it were not for SCORE. They were an invaluable wealth of information. I secured my loan (and closed within 2 months), thanks to my friends and SCORE, who incidentally still act as my chief advisors.
