LMC CODES Builds a Business With Help From SCORE
In April of 2008, Laura M. Cooney, AIA, met with SCORE to discuss a business idea. In her current employment, Laura, a NYS registered architect, taught others about the New York State building codes which an architect must follow. She felt there was an opportunity to develop a business around her teaching and code consulting.

LMC Codes, LLC provides quality half-day and full-day code training courses and code consulting on an hourly or fixed fee basis to architects, engineers and the building industry around New York State, including New York City.
With help from SCORE counselor Bob Zinnecker, Laura developed a plan for her business and was able to arrange an amicable exit arrangement with her former employer. She launched her business in July, 2008 and says, “I have had a very productive and positive year with many thanks to SCORE!”
LMC Codes seeks to provide quality and pertinent guidance in the following areas:
- Code consulting to small/mid-sized architecture and engineering firms, municipalities and property owners
- Design solution options and code compliance quality assurance support
- Code training programs for design professionals and code enforcement officials in New York
- Personal service
Laura says she still has a ways to go in some of the aspects of starting and growing her business but is happy to know that she can call on SCORE whenever the need arises. She has already encouraged a couple of people she knows who are thinking of starting businesses to talk to a SCORE counselor, since she feels strongly about the resources and support they can provide from getting started through all of the growth stages.
