Pati Robben, owner of Robben’s Nest Stitchery, has been sewing professionally for about 15 years. While living in Maryland, she started to get more and more requests for embroidery. It started with monograms and names on items that she was sewing for friends. Upon the advice of a relative, she started looking into commercial embroidery machines. Her three children had reached school age and she felt that she now had the time and energy to devote to a new business. After much thought and research, she took the plunge and purchased her first machine and Robben’s Nest was born.

Pati says “When I first became interested in starting the business, I knew that I could sew and run the machine, but I knew very little about running a business. I accessed the SBA website as well as SCORE in Rochester for help.
“I learned about business plans and the nuts and bolts of starting a business. At SCORE in Rochester, I received valuable advice and encouragement to keep running my business from Mr. Elliott. I also attended several very informative seminars at SCORE, including Marketing Your Business on the Internet and Writing a Business Plan. I know that if I run into trouble or need further advice, help is only a phone call away.
“Over time, I developed a network of colleagues and preferred suppliers that I frequently access for advice and information. I have learned the value of marketing and branding my service.
