Identify Theft

John Killackey
VP/Owner of J. Thomas Consulting, Inc

Identity theft will continue to be the number one method of committing fraud.  We entrust our personal data to businesses, schools, and governmental agencies only to watch this data being compromised and used to commit identity theft.

Individuals and organizations should be assigning greater value to the privacy and protection of personal data.  The interest in personal data on the part of criminals comes from the profits they can reap through identity theft. Many of our clients would benefit from John’s insight.

Reasons why 2009/2010 could be a banner years for identity theft criminals:

  • Bad economy spurs more criminal activity-scams involving mortgage lenders, credit card offers and high yield investments are increasing.  Insider threats to companies are on the rise.
  • Computer hackers have become a highly organized network of criminals focused on identity theft.
  • Data breaches are on the increase. High profile data losses grace our front pages each day.  Identity theft is a direct result of loss of personal data by companies and organizations.

This presentation covered the following topics:

  • The current business environment that allows identity theft to occur
  • What we can do to reduce the risk of identity theft
  • What to do if you are a victim of identity theft
